Industry 4.0 – 8 Interesting AI Success Stories

Companies in various industries have applied artificial intelligence in a revolutionary form. We have reached the era of Industry 4.0, which means autonomous systems are making an appearance, IoT devices allow people to measure anything and machine learning is becoming more and more popular among the everyday operation of companies.

In the following, we present 8 powerful AI success stories in different industries, in order to show you the power of artificial intelligence and how it is changing our everyday lives.

AI Success Stories

Sustainability – Wind Power Prediction

Renewable energy such as wind power is becoming more and more important. However, due to the fact that it is not constant, power stations cannot fully rely on it. Google came up with the solution of predicting expected wind power with the help of machine learning. Based on weather forecast and historical turbine data wind power predictions for the following 36 hours can be obtained. Thanks to this new method, power grids can plan more than a day ahead and become more comfortable with relying on wind power.

Customer Service – BlueBot (KLM)

Since 2017 customers of KLM airlines have the option of booking their flights via KLM’s Messenger. This enables the purchase process to happen in a conversational way and without human interaction from KLM’s side. Of course, in case BlueBot has some struggle with understanding its customers, human intervention will take place right away.

Customer Service – Netflix

Netflix’s recommendations is quite a popular example of how customers can be offered convenient and satisfying solutions with the help of artificial intelligence. Netflix has a feature tailored for each account that selects and recommends movies and TV shows based on the account’s viewing history. This way similar themed shows and movies are offered and the attention of customers can be kept up. This recommendation algorithm is based on artificial intelligence, no human intervention is needed.

Customer Service – Albert Heijn

One of the very well known services of Albert Heijn is their bonus card set up. Albert Heijn collects data about purchases including details such as what was pruchased, what time of the day, etc. Each customer that owes a bonus card gets special personally-tailored recommendations and discounts based on their historical purchases. This system works very similarly to Netflix’s recommendations.

Customer Service – Amazon Go

Amazon aimed at changing the physical retail experience. Thanks to their stores, customers can now just easily walk in a store, do their shopping and then walk out without having to endure any waiting in queues. All this is partially allowed by deep learning algorithms.

When entering the store customers need to scan a QR code generated by the Amazon Go application. This is linked to customers’ Amazon accounts. Following this store visitors can pick out items, place them back again, walk around without having to perform any scanning. Once customers are finished shopping they can just leave the store. All purchased items along with the invoice will appear in the application after leaving the store. At the moment Amazon operates 27 stores around the USA.

Automotive Autonomous vehicle technology

One of the most of heavily discussed AI success stories is self-driven cars. They are quite the hot topic in the past few years. Autopilot in cars was first discussed in 2013 by Elon Musk. Tesla in 2015 debuted Autopilot. As of today not all self-driving functions are available (response to stop sign, traffic lights not available currently), although each year extra features are released. Currently Tesla’s autopilot can act autonomously, however, is in need of the driver’s full attention and ability to intervene any time. It is well suited for highway driving.

General Motors is considered another leader next to Tesla regarding autonomous vehicle technology. They launched Super Cruise in 2017, also fitted for highway driving. They are currently working on developing Ultra Cruise, which aimes at offering hands-off driver-assistance system, requireing no input from the drivers’ side.

Social MediaText recognition

Text recognition is a main application of artificial intelligence. Social media plaforms, such as Twitter or Instagram use text recognition for identifying terroristic language, hate speech or offensive comments. With the help of AI, without human interaction posts containing unacceptable content can be easily and effectively filtered.

HealthcareImage recognition

Next to text recognition, imagine recognition is also an extremely relevant application of artificial intelligence. Infervision applies image recognition in a very impressive way, it is used to help the everyday work of doctors. Their product is able to accurately diagnose lung cancer from CT scans. It supports the work of radiologists in order to reduce their workload and also eliminate the repetitve work.

We hope these 8 AI success stories, peaked your interest and managed to show the incredible potentional of artificial intelligence. Most of these technologies are aimed at offering enhanced customer experience and superior customer service and also at making our everyday lives more convenient.
