Many AI projects focus on the model. Accuracy, training methods, and performance often get the most attention. But this focus hides a bigger truth: a working model alone does not make a useful product.
AI models need support. Without the right software around them, they cannot run in real settings. That includes how models are stored, how they receive data, and how their results reach users.
Döme Darázs, software engineer at COMPUTD, works on this exact problem. He builds the systems that allow AI models to move from early tests to long-term use.
“Before the model is even trained, there’s a lot of software-related work involved,” Döme explains. “You have to store the models somewhere, load the models from somewhere, get the data for the models from somewhere. All these things circle around the model, which actually does the forecast.”
His view makes it clear: success in AI also depends on what surrounds the model, not only the model itself.

A model that performs well in testing can still fail in real use. Many AI projects break during the move from prototype to production. This is not always because of model quality, but because of missing support around it.
Some models run well inside test scripts. But when traffic increases, or data changes, these setups often fail. There may be no clear process for updating the model. Logs might be missing. Output may not be easy for others to use.
Döme explains how this happens. “Once you get the models trained, then you still need to deliver the output to the clients in a format that they can understand and use. Hopefully it is also intuitive for them.”
This gap between early testing and real use is often wide. Teams may focus on getting results, but forget to build the tools needed to use those results. Models need to be tracked, tested, and made clear to users. Without this, even the best predictions lose value.
Strong AI systems are not just about model performance. They also depend on software practices that keep the system running, even when things go wrong.
Monitoring, testing, and version control play a key role. These tools help teams see what the model is doing, catch problems early, and make changes safely. Without them, even small errors can cause big issues in production.
Döme explains how these tools add value. “You have to keep the model learning, or it falls behind,” he says. This means not only retraining the model when needed, but also watching how it performs over time. If accuracy drops or input patterns change, the system must respond.
Automated tests also matter. They check that changes do not break the system. This is especially important when AI models are part of a larger product with many moving parts.
Another key point is clear logging. When logs are well-structured and easy to search, teams can understand what the system did and why. This helps with both debugging and trust.
These practices are not extras. They are needed to make sure AI products are not only accurate, but also stable and ready for real-world use.

Building AI systems brings specific problems that are not found in regular software work. These problems come from the mix of different roles, shifting data, and fast-moving business needs.
Döme points out one key challenge: the need for clear teamwork. “You need a multidisciplinary team where data scientists and software engineers work together,” he says. “They don’t always have the same background, and there is a gap to fill.”
That gap shows up in how people think, plan, and talk about the project. A strong model might be built, but if software engineers do not understand its needs, or if data scientists do not know what the system can support, progress slows down or breaks.
There is also pressure to move fast. Business timelines often push for quick results. But rushing leads to shortcuts, missing tests, and unclear code. These problems do not always show right away, but they build up over time.
This is known as technical debt. Fixing it later is often harder and more expensive than doing it right from the start.
AI systems also face a unique risk: model drift. Data that changes slowly over time can cause the model to lose accuracy. Without good monitoring, this issue may not be noticed until it affects users.
Each of these problems can be managed. But it takes planning, good habits, and tools that support change without causing harm.
Reliable AI systems depend on tools that support repeatable work, clear structure, and easy updates. These tools do not fix problems on their own, but they help teams avoid common mistakes.
Version control for both data and models is one example. When changes are tracked clearly, teams can see what was used, what changed, and why a result may be different. This reduces confusion and makes debugging easier.
Döme also points out the value of modular systems. “Trying to do everything at once usually doesn’t work well,” he says. “It’s better to split your data into training and testing sets. That way, you can work in smaller parts and check how the model is doing at each step.”

The use of AI tools has grown fast, but that growth brings new pressure. Many systems are now built without clear plans for how they will run long-term. This creates stress for teams and raises questions about stability.
Döme has seen how tools like large language models are changing some tasks. But he still sees a clear need for skilled engineers. “I don’t think AI tools will take over software engineering jobs anytime soon,” he says. “They can help with small tasks, like debugging or writing tests. But real features still need strong planning and care.”
Looking ahead, there will likely be a shift toward more focused AI systems. Instead of one large tool that tries to do everything, teams may return to smaller models built for specific tasks. These systems are easier to test, update, and control.
More companies are also starting to see the value of MLOps; the use of software methods to manage AI systems over time. This includes automated retraining, testing, and monitoring. It helps teams keep systems in shape without manual work every time.
The most stable AI systems will be built by teams that treat engineering as a core part of the process. They will not see the model as the end goal, but as one part of a product that must run well every day.
AI without strong engineering is not useful. It may work once, but it will not last. With the right setup, AI can do more than make good predictions. It can become a stable part of real systems that people trust.
