Team COMPUTD at the AI Songfestival – VPRO

At the AI Songfestival in 2020, Team COMPUTD, alongside producers Shuman & Angel-Eye, set out to explore what happens when artificial intelligence is asked to write a catchy song. The team, whose core members met at Maastricht University, aimed to demonstrate how AI can serve humanity, not the other way around. The mission was to create a cheerful, original tune with minimal human input, avoiding typical AI pitfalls like repetition and sampling.

To train the algorithms, the team filtered out negative sentiment songs and set clear constraints to ensure originality. Any generated melody that closely resembled existing Eurovision entries was discarded, encouraging the AI to push creative boundaries. Though AI provided the raw building blocks: lyrics, chords, and melody. It took our team’s careful curation and human touch to turn it into a polished and emotionally resonant piece.

The end result was “I Write A Song,” a collaborative track that embodies the experimental spirit of the AI Songfestival. While the team sees great potential in AI-generated music, they emphasize that human creativity remains essential. Their work highlights AI’s growing role in creative industries while underscoring the importance of ethical and thoughtful design. Read the full article here (in Dutch)
